Mary Ellen and Lou’s August wedding unfolded as a deeply personal and vibrant celebration—woven together with family bonds, cultural heritage, and heartfelt surprises. Their story began back in college, but their wedding day was set in motion from the homes and traditions that shaped them.
A Homecoming Morning
Mary Ellen began her wedding day in the most meaningful place imaginable: her childhood home in Clarendon Hills. It was her final morning in the home where she grew up, surrounded by her greatest supporters—her mom Mary and her twin sisters, Caroline and Meredith, who stood by her side as co–maids of honor. These quiet, emotional hours were filled with laughter, tears, and sweet memories. Just a few miles away, Lou got ready in Hinsdale with his two brothers, Mickey and Kenny, remembering their late father whose presence was felt throughout the day.
A Ceremony Full of Tradition and Devotion
The ceremony took place at Notre Dame Catholic Church, a meaningful and classic setting that echoed with reverence and unity. It was officiated by Monsignor Kenneth Velo, a beloved figure in the Chicago Catholic community, whose presence brought spiritual weight and warmth to the ceremony. His eloquence and heartfelt words resonated with every guest.
The ceremony uniquely blended English and Spanish readings, paying tribute to both Mary Ellen’s and Lou’s backgrounds. One of the most memorable moments came during the El Lazo tradition, a cherished part of Mexican Catholic weddings. A decorative lasso was gently draped around the couple as a symbol of their eternal bond and unity—an emotional moment that honored Lou’s cultural roots and their shared faith.
Music, Rain, and Unexpected Magic
The rain came and went all day, misting the windows and leaving the grass slick beneath guests’ feet. But like magic, it cleared just in time for photos, casting a dreamy haze across the Butterfield Country Club in Oak Brook. The wet grounds reflected light in soft glows, giving every image a romantic, storybook quality.
During the cocktail hour, a live mariachi band set the tone with lively melodies, creating an atmosphere filled with joy and heritage. It was one of the many moments that highlighted Lou’s Mexican heritage and the couple’s dedication to celebrating their cultural backgrounds.
A Night to Remember
As the evening unfolded, a live band took over and filled the ballroom with music. Though Mary Ellen is usually reserved, she shocked everyone when she took the stage. With poise and power, she belted out a song that no one saw coming. Her voice soared—leaving jaws dropped and hearts full. It was a once-in-a-lifetime moment that captured the essence of the day: full of love, surprise, and soul.
Whether it was the emotional first looks with Mary Ellen’s dad and bridesmaids, or the radiant energy on the dance floor, this wedding was a true reflection of who they are and the village that surrounds them.
